The University of Oregon is committed to creating an engaging academic and work environment for students and employees of all faiths and religions. And we are committed to complying with state and federal laws and regulations to support reasonable religious accommodations. Below please find information about the religious accommodations process for students and employees. Accommodations requests forms for students and employees respectively are linked below.
Employees who need to be absent from work due to a religious obligation or observance must communicate and make arrangements with their supervisors in advance. Examples of religious, moral and ethical accommodations may include making exceptions to dress code or grooming requirements, providing periodic breaks so that adherents are able to pray in accordance with the tenants of their religion, excusing absences, providing time off, or a schedule change to permit observance of religious holidays or the Sabbath. Each request is assessed on an individual basis, and requests that cause undue hardship to the university cannot be accommodated.
Students who need to be absent from a class due to a religious obligation or observance must communicate and make arrangements with instructors in advance. Each religious accommodation request will be assessed on an individual basis; requests that cause a fundamental alteration to a course or undue hardship to the university cannot be accommodated. Religious accommodations could include, but are not limited to, allowing course absences, rescheduling an exam, adjusting due dates, providing an opportunity to make up coursework, providing space for prayer, permitting religious attire, guiding University Housing assignments, or permitting ceremonial activity in approved locations. In submitting accommodations requests, please observe these deadlines:
- For Housing related room requests, requests must be made by June 1 for the following academic year.
- For course related requests, requests must be made by the end of the second week of the term or at least 14 days prior to the observance if the observance occurs in the first two weeks of the term. We will make every effort to consider requests received outside this deadline.
- All other requests must be made no later than 14 days before the accommodation is needed.
